Space Cadets is a new imprint, surely to please fans more partial to minimal drum & bass. The first release - by Russian minimalist Oak - is out now is already and is, in my humble opinion, nothing short of fantastic. Check them out here:
“In December the St. Petersburg -based crew/website Microfunk announced a follow up for their previous project, Applied Minimalism where participants were encouraged to create music using only the TR-808 kick drum as the only sound source. In the new project called Parts and Sequences people were asked to send drums, basses, pads, melodies and whatnot in order to create a tune together. Obviously the samples had to be in the same tempo (170) and key (Am or C). The end result is now here, but because of the sheer amount and variety of the sounds provided, Bop, Jalex and Oak ended up creating a live session consisting of six “scenes” instead of just writing one tune.”
Zul (Subvert HQ, Singapore) has been DJing and promoting parties in the Lion City since the 1990s, performing along side the likes of dBridge, DJ Friction, Joe Syntax, Stamina MC, John B, A-Sides, Pendulum, Cyantific, Sonic, London Elektricity as well as Logistics and Hospital Records' Chris Goss. Gigs-wise, its gone from Hong Kong (he spent time with the White Label crew in 2001), Jakarta to London (playing at the legendary Hospitality parties in Shoreditch, UK) with bits of radio (MediaCorp Radio's Lush 99.5FM Clubscape sessions, to be exact) and a release on Take Off Records squeezed in between.
When not busy with his day job as a journalist in Singapore, Zul also keeps it cutting edge away from the dance floor with the Subvert Sessions Podcast (download via subverthq.blogspot.sg), blending together leftfield and idiosyncratic beats of the 170bpm variety.
