FACT mix 186: Blunted Robots

The work of Brackles and Shortstuff, Blunted Robots debuted last year with Martin Kemp’s (Brackles’ obscenely talented brother) ‘No Charisma’, a crossover anthem that seemed to infiltrate the sets of everybody going, backed with Mickey Pearce’s ragga stomper ‘Innami’. Two more Martin Kemp 12”s have followed, broken up by Bok Bok’s seasick ‘Citizens Dub’ and another minor classic from Brackles and Shortstuff, ‘Pipey D’.

This FACT mix is packed with unreleased cuts from the Blunted Robots camp and future label material from Terrible Shock and DJ Dom.

XLR8R Podcast: Mount Kimbie

Since quietly dropping a couple of EPs on Hotflush Recordings last year, UK duo Mount Kimbie has shot into the stratosphere, as its recently released debut album, Crooks and Lovers, has taken the whole post-dubstep-future-bass-whatever-it's-called continuum to a whole new audience. Perhaps it's the inclusion of field recordings and other organic sounds, or maybe it's the palpable sense of melancholy in their songs, but the youthful pair has folks practically salivating over their maiden journey to North America, which begins this Friday with a performance at Seattle's Decibel Festival. Over the course of the following week, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos will trek across the continent before heading back across the pond; a full list of tour dates is here. To celebrate their touchdown on American shores, the boys have assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Much like their own music, the mix finds the guys dabbling in dancefloor sonics, but the duo never abandons its love of woozy low-end hum and experimental wanderlust—not that we'd want them to.

Track list:

01 System "All"
02 xxxy "This Much" (Fortified Audio)
03 Mount Kimbie "Carbonated" (Hotflush)
04 Pangaea "Dead Living" (Hessle Audio)
05 Zomby "Test Me for a Reason" (Hyperdub)
06 Kode 9 "You Don't Wash" (Martyn Remix)
07 Dam-Funk "How It Be Between U and Me" (Stones Throw)
08 El Fog "El Cloud" (Moteer)
09 Klaus "Tusk"
10 Scuba "Hard Boiled (SCB Edit)" (Hotflush)
11 Senking "Tar"
12 Blawan "Fram" (Hessle Audio)
13 Untold "Anaconda (Tribal Guarachero Mix)" (white)
14 Klaus "Neph"
15 Unknown "Unknown"
16 James Blake "Klavierwerke" (R&S)
17 Arkist "Only If You Mean It"

4Hero: Interview & Bloc09 set

4Hero speaks to Bloc about music influences, the birth of hardcore and the return of the Manix moniker with Marc Mac.

For those who don't know - when it comes to raw, forward-thinking rave music, the UK owes an innumerable debt to 4Hero. Originally comprised of Marc Mac, Dego, Iain Bardouille and Gus Lawrence, the North London outfit stand alongside the likes of Shut Up & Dance and The Scientist (aka DJ Hype and Phil ‘Pure Science’ Sebastiane) as the very first pioneers of the bass-loaded, sample-heavy form of breakbeat music that would come to be known as hardcore.

dBridge: Interview & Bloc10 set

The Autonomic and Exit Records boss, dBridge talks to BLOC about his first meeting with Instra:mental, restoring d&b’s credibility and the plans for his second solo artist album. READ INTERVIEW HERE.

FACT mix 182: Four Tet

Born Kieran Hebden, Four Tet was already making waves as a member of the group Fridge when he dropped ‘Thirtysixtwentyfive’, his 1998 debut single for Trevor Jackson’s Output label (you can probably guess how long the track lasted). A debut album, Dialogue followed, but what really propelled Hebden to stardom – and set the tone for Four Tet as one of music’s most celebrated and in-demand remixers, later lending his magic to Bloc Party, Radiohead, Anti-Pop Consortium and many more – was his remix of Aphex Twin’s ‘[Cliffs]’, commissioned for Warp Records’ Warp 10 + 3: Remixes collection.

Track list:

1. Rocketnumbernine – Matthew and Toby (Four Tet remix) [Text Records]
2. Pheeroan Ak Laff – 3 in 1 [Passin' Thru]
3. Soul Capsule – Seekers (Ricardo Villalobos remix) [Trelik]

8. Ramadanman – Glut [Hemlock]
9. JD Robb – Canon in Percussive Sound [Folkways]
10. Index – Starlight (break) [Record Shack Records]
11. Four Tet – Nothing to see [Soul Jazz]

XLR8R Podcast 159: Sepalcure

The UK gets most of the shine for the whole post-dubstep/future-garage/whatever-the-hell-it's-called-this-week scene, but a few US artists have been making some noise over on this side of the pond. One such act is Sepalcure, the Brooklyn-based duo of Travis Stewart (a.k.a. Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma. After years spent working together running the Cassette NYC club night and the online mix archive Percussion Lab, last year the producers joined forces in the studio, focusing on the soulful sounds of '90s house, 2-step, and UK bass music. Their debut, the Love Pressure EP, dropped earlier this summer on the esteemed Hotflush label, and now we've corralled the boys into assembling an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast. And not to get all patriotic and flag-waving, but Sepalcure has done the US of A real proud here, expanding their sound palette even further while adeptly shifting tempos, moods, and styles over the course of 23 tracks and 51 minutes.

01 Mediq "Have a Pleasant Stay"
02 Titus 12 "Step Up (Mosca Remix)"
03 Andreya Triana "A Town Called Obsolete (Mount Kimbie Remix)" (Ninja Tune)
04 Model 500 "I Wanna Be There" (R&S)
05 Jacques Greene "The Look"
06 vvv "Aisle Seat"
07 Kidkut "ILove04" (Apple Pips)
08 French Fries "Senta" (Young Gunz)
09 Sepalcure "Love Pressure (Lando Kal Remix)"
10 L-Vis 1990 "Forever You (Dub)" (Night Slugs)
11 Sepalcure "Me"
12 Hackman "Always" (Shifting Peaks)
13 Balam Acab "See Birds" (Tri Angle)
14 Noiapre "Lava Templada"
15 Dorian Concept "Her Tears Taste Like Pears" (Ninja Tune)
16 Melanie Fiona "It Kills Me (Breakage Remix)" (SRC/Universal Motown)
17 XI "Gamma Rain"
18 Shed "No Way!" (Ostgut Ton)
19 Roof Light "What Makes You So Special" (Highpoint Lowlife)
20 Fantastic Mr Fox "Over" (Black Acre)
21 Sines "This Love"
22 Africa Hitech "Said Speed" (Warp)
23 Autechre "Tilapia" (Warp)

Instra:mental - Live at Audioriver Festival 2010, Poland

The duo of Al Bleek and Kid Drama, Instra:mental, had their debut in the London drum & bass scene way back in the year 2000. After a break they really hit their stride with releases on Soul:r and Darkestral. Since then they've been steadily building momentum with a number of influential singles across labels such as dBridge's Exit and Naked Lunch and developing a sound uniquely their own. From their south London studio, 'The Zoo', they've been rewriting the template of what drum'n'bass can be, crossing over into dubstep and decreasing the bpm whenever they feel like it. All along there's been a steady flow of collaborators, from No-U Turn legend Nico to the likes of Skream, Burial and longtime mate dBridge. Most recently the duo has been creating waves with their halfstep robo ballad "Watching You". They've also been awarded as "best breakthrough producers" by DJ Mag and while their monthly Autonomic podcast has been gaining a massive following, showcasting fresh tracks alongside classics from Minneapolis to Detroit and back to London. And with a debut album and a Fabriclive session looming on the horizon the future looks bright for Instra:mental.
