FACT mix 298: Dusk & Blackdown

Dusk & Blackdown are another of those acts that we’ve been asking for a FACT mix from for years. Last month, they submitted it, and we’re glad they chose to wait. In late 2011, the pair’s Keysound label finds itself on an all-time rich run of form – and it pays to bear in mind that this is an imprint that’s released music by Burial, Skream, Zomby, Durrty Goodz and more in the past. Albums have arrived from some of the UK’s finest acts in Damu, Sully, and most notably, LV & Joshua Idehen with the remarkable Routes, while the elusive LHF collective continue to use Keysound as a key incubation chamber for their unique, deceptive dubstep. They’ve also signed a future single from Logos, who’s been twisting Wiley’s eski template into his own isolationist creations and creating some of 2011′s most promising music in the process.

Champion's Mix for Dazed Digital

Descending into underground of UK Funky, for his exclusive Dazed mix, DJ Champion, a self confessed ‘bassline freak’ spins in a selection of raw and rugged rhythm from his own productions to new releases from artists on his label Formula. For those already down with Champion production’s Lighter EP will be a familiar weapon of choice, with heaps decent air time on 1xtra and in Alex Bok Bok, Ben UFO and Roska sets. In fact the king of funky was so hooked to what he heard he signed Champion to his Kicks & Snares label, a collaboration which needless to say will see many releases in the near future. What really makes Champion’s EP’s work though is that even Grime DJs, usually averse to the Fruity Loops sound, will play his records, again and again. So to those unfamiliar prepare yourself for a muscular percussion section, with seductive stripped back drums and a ‘good gracious bodacious’ 130BPM bass line.

The Daily Street 017 - JAMIE GRIND

Mixtape 017 is brought to us by Jamie Grind, who has forged his own sound in the UK Bass Music scene with his Hip-Hop influenced take on UK Garage. Originally from Leeds and recently relocated to London, Jamie has a unique ear when it comes to creating dance music, and this mix represents it so well. Moving across a broad spectrum of genres, all of which are huge influences on Jamie’s own sound, he pulls for the likes of Ramadanman, xxxy, Spectr and Julio Bashmore before moving on to include some classic Grime followed by Drake, finishing on Juke. RA.277 Cosmin TRG

Techno through a bass music filter.

It's actually kind of sad that Cosmin TRG's exploration of genres has been a talking point—can't an artist, you know, do more than one thing?—but such is life. The Romanian producer was a dubstep/garage dude when he started out back in 2007, hopped over to house for a bit and is now residing in techno country. One by-product of this restlessness is the name Cosmin TRG (or TRG as he was initially known) has adorned many a leading label these past four years—Hessle Audio, [NakedLunch], Tempa, Immerse Records, Hotflush, Hemlock and Rush Hour being merely a selection of them. The latest to put a welcoming arm around him was Modeselektor's Fifty Weapons. Separat / Izolat, released at the beginning of 2011, signalled Cosmin's intention to get truly stuck into the tough stuff, while it seemed the dream had been fully realised when it was announced in June that a full-length offering was in the works for Fifty Weapons. Try as it might Simulat wasn't quite able to shake off Cosmin's roaming past—which is exactly what made it so great; RA.277 suffers the same affliction with exactly the same outcome. This is techno but not quite as you know.

XLR8R Podcast 215: Sully

UK producer Sully (a.k.a. Jack Stevens) is a bit of a mysterious figure. When his tracks first began surfacing three or four years ago, Sully was praised for his infusion of melancholy 2-step-garage sensibilities into thicker, bass-heavy rhythms. While this now seems commonplace in today's post-everything UK bass spectrum, Sully was undeniably ahead of his time, yet was never properly celebrated for his boundary-pushing ways. Perhaps that's about to change, as just yesterday he released Carrier, his impressive debut full-length, via Blackdown's Keysound Recordings imprint. The LP finds Sully expanding his sound even further, dipping his toes into juke and footwork, a trend that's also evident on this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Beginning in moody garage and house territory, he skillfully moves weaves in heavier bass sounds before jumping headlong into footwork and even some drum & bass before it's all finished. It's a highly enjoyable ride, partially thanks to his purposefully choppy (and remarkably effective) mixing style, which gives some of the transitions an almost hip-hop feel. It seems that Sully is once again doing things his own way, and that's when he's at his best.

The Daily Street 016 - ARTIFACT

Those with an ear to the ground in the UK dance scene will have heard of Artifact, a fresh new producer from Bristol creating a unique sound that merges hard hitting sounds of Dubstep with the swung rhythms of 2-step, UK Garage and UK Funky. If you’ve ever heard one of his dubs on a dance floor, you will have known – it’s hard not to take notice when they drop. A multi-talented producer, Artifact is also part of the Bristol trio Portraits as well as the Juke collective Grunk & Crime. Having had tunes signed to the likes of Car Crash Set, Pollen, Deadplate and Fortified Audio, it’s clear to see that Artifact is going to be a name to reckon with in the very near future.

RA.274 George FitzGerald

House meets garage meets bass.

Although operating in a grey area between genres is hardly a novelty these days—particularly for a London-based producer—George FitzGerald is one of those pulling off the trick better than most. He's closely associated with Hotflush Recordings—itself a bastion of ambiguity—thanks to a pair of 12-inches that came at bass music from a house and garage starting point. (Or was it the other way around?) FitzGerald built his grounding in the scene as a co-promoter of Man Make Music, the London party that has been showcasing, well, a little bit of everything since its inception back in 2007. The crew behind the event has now begun an offshoot imprint of the same name, with FitzGerald helming its maiden release, Fernweh / Hearts, which coincidently hits record shops next week.

FitzGerald leverages his ties to Hotflush on RA.247 by bringing bags of the label's unreleased material to the table, interspersed with the types of hybrid sounds that have made London arguably the most exciting destination in electronic music at present.

FACT mix 279: Distal
