RA.388 Fis

Olly Peryman was only ever tentatively linked to the drum & bass scene, but these days the bind has been totally snapped. Defining where's he's ended up, though, feels next to impossible. "Lately most of my rhythms are drawn from what I hear and see from my body during meditation," he said recently, illustrating just how far from leftfield his beats have been coming. The biggest takeaway from our Breaking Through piece with Peryman last year was that he doesn't produce to a grid—his sounds, unanchored by quantization, are laid down in a way that "sounds right" to him. It's an approach that mitigates his appeal to DJs, but has yielded some of the strangest and most distinctive electronic music in recent memory. If you're looking for an entry point into the murky world of Fis, then we give you "DMT Usher." The track, which will be re-released later this month as part of an EP for Tri Angle, is like a grotty remix of Apocalypse Now's opening sequence, with Martin Sheen sweating as the helicopter circles above. Or for the full immersive experience, get hold of The Commons, which was released last year on dBridge's Exit Records. Its six tracks fuck with rhythm and charcoal textures in a way that Fis now completely owns.

RA.386 Machinedrum

When Machinedrum reinvented himself in 2011 with footwork as his muse, it sent seismic waves through bass music. By then footwork was the sound du jour, but Travis Stewart stood out by blending it with the pastoral textures of Boards Of Canada, the heart-in-mouth thrill of jungle, and his own polished aesthetic. We liked Room(s) so much that we gave it 5/5 rating. Needless to say the pressure was on for this year's follow-up, the excellent Vapor City, a concept record about an imaginary city and his first album for Ninja Tune.

Critical acclaim aside, Machinedrum's impact is evident in his RA podcast—one look at the tracklist and you'll see there's a whole legion of producers mashing up jungle, footwork and drum & bass into a thrilling fast-paced amalgam behind him (along with some tasty unreleased material of his own). Fracture, Om Unit, Tessela and Ital Tek are among the ranks bringing renewed attention to the tempo.

RA.372 Akkord

It's been revealed that the Akkord project is headed up by Synkro & Indigo, which, if you're familiar with their music, makes total sense. Both solo and in tandem, Joe McBride and Liam Blackburn have spent the past five years turning out intelligently crafted bass music in a variety of vibrant shades. The Akkord name has similarly grown to be associated with complex rhythms and imposing bass weight. The journey began in 2012 with a couple of limited-run vinyl releases and continued with Navigate, a standout four-track EP for Houndstooth, the high-flying label venture from London venue Fabric. That release's title track is a good place to get a handle on Akkord: the mood is cold but engaging, and its clever drum programming puts it at an intersection between techno, bass music and IDM.

In THIS interview, an Akkord album is the works for Houndstooth, but ahead of that release we get RA.372, a near hour-long exploration of the duo's thrilling vision of club music.

RA.358 D-Bridge

When Resident Advisor spoke to dBridge for an edition of Machine Love in 2011, we made the point that Darren White's career has been one of distinct chapters. Two years on, and we may not have had the seismic shifts such as those between his Future Forces Inc, Bad Company or Autonomic phases, but White has continued his tireless pursuit of innovation. In Chic Anatomy / Den-En-Toshi and Passing Encounter / Scarlett he began exploring straight 4/4 for the first time, passing Drexciyan electro and tense techno as he did so. Meanwhile his label, Exit Records, has issued some seriously far-out club forms in the last 12 months. There's been Dawn Day Night's raucous jungle/juke hybrids, FIS's blackened off-the-grid rhythms, and Om Unit and Sam Binga's unlikely marriage of drum & bass and boogie.

Exit is as much the star as D-Bridge on RA.358. The mix is composed mainly of unreleased tracks from the label, much of it lifted from the follow-up to the excellent Mosaic Vol. 1 compilation.

RA.EX104 - Doc Scott

The drum and bass legend talks about Music House, Blue Note and more. Doc Scott is a drum & bass legend. With tracks on Reinforced and Metalheadz like "Here Comes The Drumz" and "Shadowboxing," his name ranks among the Goldies and the 4Heros of the world. But hear him tell it, and he's a DJ first and foremost. And that's exactly what he's focused the majority of his attention on throughout his career, spreading the gospel of drum & bass—even when the minimal, rolling style that he is often associated with has fallen out of mainstream favor. Resident Advisor talked earlier this month at his home in Coventry about hallowed institutions like The Music House, where Scott cut his dubs, and The Blue Note, where he had some of his best nights out as a DJ and punter in the '90s at the Metalheadz Sunday Sessions.

RA.288 Consequence

Advanced drum and bass from an Autonomic stalwart: If you were to take his two album projects this year in isolation, it could reasonably be concluded that Cam McLaren had only a peripheral involvement with the drum & bass scene. As one half of They Live alongside Joe Seven, McLaren released Cancel Standard in March this year, a record RA's Andrew Ryce described at the time as "basically an electro album." His forthcoming full-length as Consequence, meanwhile, has far more in common with Aphex Twin than Andy C. So what are his drum & bass credentials? Well, dBridge signed McLaren while on tour in New Zealand back in 2009, figuring that his melodically rich and experimental take on the genre would work perfectly as an album for his label, Exit Records. And he was right. Live For Never stands as one of the finest examples in its class, coinciding perfectly with—and helping to define—the sound that would later be coined as "Autonomic" thanks to dBridge and Instra:mental's ground-breaking podcast series of the same name. RA.277 Cosmin TRG

Techno through a bass music filter.

It's actually kind of sad that Cosmin TRG's exploration of genres has been a talking point—can't an artist, you know, do more than one thing?—but such is life. The Romanian producer was a dubstep/garage dude when he started out back in 2007, hopped over to house for a bit and is now residing in techno country. One by-product of this restlessness is the name Cosmin TRG (or TRG as he was initially known) has adorned many a leading label these past four years—Hessle Audio, [NakedLunch], Tempa, Immerse Records, Hotflush, Hemlock and Rush Hour being merely a selection of them. The latest to put a welcoming arm around him was Modeselektor's Fifty Weapons. Separat / Izolat, released at the beginning of 2011, signalled Cosmin's intention to get truly stuck into the tough stuff, while it seemed the dream had been fully realised when it was announced in June that a full-length offering was in the works for Fifty Weapons. Try as it might Simulat wasn't quite able to shake off Cosmin's roaming past—which is exactly what made it so great; RA.277 suffers the same affliction with exactly the same outcome. This is techno but not quite as you know.

RA.274 George FitzGerald

House meets garage meets bass.

Although operating in a grey area between genres is hardly a novelty these days—particularly for a London-based producer—George FitzGerald is one of those pulling off the trick better than most. He's closely associated with Hotflush Recordings—itself a bastion of ambiguity—thanks to a pair of 12-inches that came at bass music from a house and garage starting point. (Or was it the other way around?) FitzGerald built his grounding in the scene as a co-promoter of Man Make Music, the London party that has been showcasing, well, a little bit of everything since its inception back in 2007. The crew behind the event has now begun an offshoot imprint of the same name, with FitzGerald helming its maiden release, Fernweh / Hearts, which coincidently hits record shops next week.

FitzGerald leverages his ties to Hotflush on RA.247 by bringing bags of the label's unreleased material to the table, interspersed with the types of hybrid sounds that have made London arguably the most exciting destination in electronic music at present.

RA.259 - Skream

Dubstep's biggest DJ steps up.

Croydon. Big Apple Records. Hatcha. Skream's back story evokes all the right passages of dubstep folklore. Oli Jones began making music as a 15-year-old; he was an employee of the now legendary record store and one of dubstep's first and foremost producers before his teenage years were through. Much of the music in the developmental stages of his career was recorded alongside Benga, with whom Jones now lines up—in addition to Artwork—as Magnetic Man. The group became the genre's biggest crossover success to date at the end of last year with the release of their self-titled album, although Jones as always remained entirely difficult to pin down— NonPlus+, Swamp 81, Deep Medi Musik and Tempa are just a few of the imprints to host his zig-zagging 12-inches in the past few of years.

RA.EX028 Instra:mental

Via Resident Advisor: As RA’s Richard Carnes pointed out at the beginning of last year, Alex Green and Damon Kirkham, AKA Instra:mental, have been responsible for some of the most exciting drum & bass of recent vintage. Teaming up with dBridge, they’re responsible for the Autonomic sound, an open-ended approach that has taken in a celebrated podcast, a revered mix for fabric and a club brand that is now getting booked around the world. Nowadays, though, they’re interested in creating just about anything but: electro, techno, dubstep and anything that defies description is what you’ll find on their new album, Resolution 653. As the world of electronic music seems more open to eclecticism than just about any time in memory, it’s clear that things are only going to get bigger for the duo.”

Resident Advisor EX020: Kenny Larkin

Via Resident Advisor:

Music, to be quite honest, only took hold in Kenny Larkin's life because his fledgling stand-up career didn't take off in the way that he had hoped. The Detroit DJ/producer moved to California in the early '00s to trade strobe light for spotlight. It's not hard to blame him. Often forgotten behind the bigger names of Detroit's second wave, it seemingly took a well-timed reissue of early work from Rush Hour and an excellent new full-length for Planet E in 2008 for audiences to realize the breadth of his catalogue and his continued relevance.

So, even as he slowly makes moves towards shifting out of music and into a career in Hollywood, the allure of music is still undeniable for the veteran DJ/producer. As RA's Todd L. Burns found out in conversation late last month, things are going too well for Larkin to give up the creature comforts that music provides. Especially considering one of the last times that Larkin got onstage in Los Angeles, he bombed. The time before that? He was arrested only hours before his gig. Find a priest, a rabbi, a minister and settle in at the bar. This is our funniest Exchange yet.
