FACT mix 450 - Stacey Pullen (July '14)

One of the key figures of Detroit techno’s second wave steps up on this week’s FACT mix. First under aliases like Bango and Kosmik Messenger then under his birth name, Stacey Pullen spent the 1990s helping to both continue the legacy of his friend and collaborator Derrick May’s generation, while also opening it up to influences like broken beat. Although he was at his most prolific in the ’90s, Pullen still regularly releases music and runs his own label, Blackflag.

Despite being an established producer, Pullen’s reputation as a DJ is just as strong. Unlike some of his peers, he’s not spent his later years developing a ludicrous live show or resting on his morals; rather, he still plays it raw, hard and soulful.

A Guy Called Gerald - AFTER THE AFTER SELECTION Part 2

ASC - Proton / Electron [PUSHING RED]

ASC fans, here's something to look forward to. The Auxiliary boss fires his second offering on Pushing Red and it's one of his best releases yet.

A fantastic follow up to his debut on the label, this one shows off his versatility and brilliance at crafting techno themed soundscapes. Proton starts off with chest thumping kicks and a clever undulating bassline as in true ASC fashion. Blips & bleeps weave in and out of the background before the snare drops in to take the track onwards. On the flipside, Electron is another deep techno piece - a solid 4/4 keeps the momentum strong with pulsating bass and smooth melodies.

Full of radical dynamics and drama - this is one slab of plastic that leaves you giddy and wanting more. Out on Jan 28 2013 at all good outlets - go seek.

FACT MIX 360: TREVINO

When you hear the words “house” and “alias”, it’s easy to think of people making their music more polite, but that’s far from the case with Trevino. The first released result of Marcus Intalex’s – an acclaimed producer in the drum’n'bass world for well over a decade – drop in tempo was ‘Chip’, an 808-driven howitzer that paired streamlined drums with builds of wild synth flare; to us, it seemed to take the blueprint that Intalex’s old sparring mates Instra:mental had established on their album Resolution 653 and firmly up the ante. Enjoy.

FACT MIX 353: SCUBA

A front-runner in dubstep since 2006 – though, of course, Scuba hasn’t actually made dubstep in quite some time – Paul Rose has steadily risen through the ranks of UK and European dance music, recent album Personality (not to mention the single that preceded it, ‘Adrenalin’) not just shedding any remaining dubstep skin, but casting off the preconceptions of being a Brit in Berlin. Personality was big, brash, often brilliant, and whatever you thought of it, proved one of 2012′s most talked about albums – no mean feat when dance music full-lengths so often fall into the predictable middle ground.

Podcast 264: DJ Stingray's New Forms Mix

Summer may be rapidly coming to a close, but the global onslaught of high-quality electronic-music festivals continues without respite. This week, attentions are turning toward Vancouver, which is playing host to the annual New Forms Festival, four-day art and music event with a lineup featuring XLR8R favorites such as Actress, Kode9, Canblaster, Kuedo, Teebs, Pilooski, Kevin McPhee, and others too numerous to list. We asked the New Forms organizers if one of the festival artists would like to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series, and we have to admit that we were pretty excited when we were told that Detroit veteran DJ Stingray was up to the task. A master of hard, stripped-down electro and techno, the masked artist—an affiliate of Urban Tribe and Underground Resistance—stays true to form here, blazing through more than 20 tracks of gritty electro breakbeats and drum-machine-driven sounds. With his rapid-fire rhythms and lightning-quick mixes, Stingray has built a podcast that offers an unrelenting, even uncompromising listen, not to mention a tracklist that will undoubtedly work Discogs regulars into a tizzy. It's dark, minimal, fast, and nearly devoid of melody, but it manages to be completely compelling all the same.

Until Silence

Until Silence - RED010
A. That Shine
AA. Hands Tied
Out in all stores June 11, 2012

Until Silence's second offering for Pushing Red are two slices of funkiness cutting a swathe through house, techno and future soul. That Shine is clearly the stand out track, a dance floor pleaser with its pulsating kicks and weaving acid lines. Flipside Hands Tied is equally sumptuous: A piece of blissed out 4/4 funk built around soulful vocals. Polished yet seductive, this is irresistible.
