Hyp 165: Kid Drama

Damon Kirkham likes an alias, that much is clear. Formerly one half of Instra:mental (along with Al 'Boddika' Green), he operated as Kid Drama, before employing the Jon Convex moniker around the time the duo split around 2011. Details of the split remain sparse to this day, but what is apparent is that the sepration hasn't stopped the flow of quality music being released by Kirkham. Always operating with a sonic pallete that took note from - but didn't exclusively sitck to - Drum n Bass, he's now focusing on his output as Kid Drama, teaming up with former Autonomic collaborator d-Bridge as Heart Drive for a series of podcasts and some new material. With the podcasts focusing on a glitchy half-step and synth heavy electronica, it would appear Heart Drive is a new exciting chapter in Kirkham's perennially forward facing musical career.

Tracklist free, Hyp 165 takes in all facets of Kirkham's career, travelling from his Autonomic days to the present day revival of Kid Drama. Jungle, Footwork, Half-Step and DnB all fit in seamlessly as Kirkham keeps the quality throughout for an hour's worth of music that refuses to sit still for a single second.

RA.386 Machinedrum

When Machinedrum reinvented himself in 2011 with footwork as his muse, it sent seismic waves through bass music. By then footwork was the sound du jour, but Travis Stewart stood out by blending it with the pastoral textures of Boards Of Canada, the heart-in-mouth thrill of jungle, and his own polished aesthetic. We liked Room(s) so much that we gave it 5/5 rating. Needless to say the pressure was on for this year's follow-up, the excellent Vapor City, a concept record about an imaginary city and his first album for Ninja Tune.

Critical acclaim aside, Machinedrum's impact is evident in his RA podcast—one look at the tracklist and you'll see there's a whole legion of producers mashing up jungle, footwork and drum & bass into a thrilling fast-paced amalgam behind him (along with some tasty unreleased material of his own). Fracture, Om Unit, Tessela and Ital Tek are among the ranks bringing renewed attention to the tempo.

XLR8R Podcast 257: Jon Convex

Whether it's fair or not, Jon Convex is probably best known as "the other guy from Instra:mental." To be certain, his former production partner Boddika has snagged a lot of headlines over the past year or so, but Convex hasn't exactly been a slouch. Building upon the stripped-down, electro-flavored rhythms that powered the final Instra:mental album, Resolution 653, Convex has been releasing a stready stream of bass-loaded, robotic funk workouts on labels such as [NakedLunch] and 3024. Next week, he'll be releasing his debut solo LP, Idoru, on his own Convex Industries imprint, so we've invited him to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series to help commemorate the occasion. Interestingly enough, the hour-long session largely finds Convex going a bit deeper and operating comfortably within a more house- and techno-oriented framework, dropping cuts from the likes of heavyweights such as John Tejada, Maceo Plex, and Shed (under his Traveller guise). Make no mistake, Convex definitely flashes some acid crunch and low-end heft here, but he's a veteran artist, and as such, knows how to craft a compelling listen without constantly slamming his foot on the throttle.

Track list:

01 Unknown "Untitled"
02 Alex Smoke "Make My Day (Lusine Remix)" (Soma)
03 Mesak "Echos Bones" (Klakson)
04 Lusine "Sunset" (Ghostly)
05 Uner "Lapan To" (Cécille)
06 John Tejada "Fading Memory" (Immigrant)
07 Unknown "Untitled"
08 John Tejada "Labyrinth" (Palette)
09 Maetrik "Work It Remix" (Siteholder)
10 Justin Martin "Get Low (J.Phlip Remix)" (Dirtybird)
11 Maetrik "Envy" (Dumb Unit)
12 Jon Convex "Aversion" (Convex Industries)
13 Femme En Fourrure "2003" (Convex Industries)
14 Jon Convex "Four Faces" (Convex Industries)
15 Accent "DX Jam"
16 Jon Convex "What I Need (feat. Velvit)" (Convex Industries)
17 Good Guy Mikesh "Spare (Axel Boman Remix)" (Ki)
18 Maceo Plex "Your Style" (Crosstown Rebels)

ZZT "Partys Over Los Angeles (Jon Convex Remix)"

The City of Angels is the next stop for Tiga side-project ZZT, whose first LP, Partys Over Earth, will be released on November 7 via the Turbo imprint. "Partys Over Los Angeles" is the album's second single, and this remix from UK producer Jon Convex (pictured above) finds the Canadian man-diva getting upstaged by Convex—who also happens to be one half of Instra:mental — as the low-end - and vintage-electro-loving beatmaker smelts the hyperactive original in a crucible of vintage bass. The "Partys Over Los Angeles" single also includes reworks from Duke Dumont and TWR 72, and will be released on October 25.

FACT mix 240: Jon Convex

Instra:mental’s Damon Kirkham announces his new solo project with a mix of electro-powered house and stepping, dystopian techno. The Jon Convex project is an outlet for Kirkham’s more experimental tendencies, though its muse is still very much the dance floor.
