Hyponik 180: Epoch

Whilst Dubstep’s low frequency oscillations and dramatic dynamics might have initially sounded inextricably linked to the concrete jungle of Croydon from which it came, there was clearly an inherent quality that gave it global appeal. This goes some way to explaining this week’s sub heavy Hyp mix from Kiwi producer Epoch. Now living in Melbourne, the Antipodean beat maker speaks in a musical language of darkened tones that’s faithful to the genre’s roots, whilst still keeping an eye on progress and evolution. With acclaimed releases on Keysound and Soundman Chronicles, he’s marked himself out amongst the new wave producers such as Gantz, Commodo, Compa and Wen, who are hepling to ensure the genre remains a creative force. His collaboration with the latter in particular produced 2012′s ‘Hydraulics’, an ocean deep head nodder released on his own Egyptian Avenue imprint that packed fearsome bass weight.

Dropping the likes of Coki’s timelessly filthy classic ‘Lucifer’ to break you out of your Monday morning stupor, Epoch navigates between the past and the present of Dubstep, delivering a strong and clear sonic mission statement. Asking for some words on 7 choice cuts from the mix, we got presented with a humorous and enthusiastic appraisal of some tunes he holds very close to his heart. Enjoy.

Hyp 168: Randall

This week on Hyp 168, a true master of his craft unloads an hour of classics on you. An ambassador for Jungle since its conception, Randall is held in the highest esteem across the genre as one of the finest DJ’s to ever rinse out an Amen break. A resident at two of the most legendary parties of the 90′s in AWOL (A Way Of Life) and Metalheadz’s Sunday Session at Hoxton’s Blue Note, Randall became famous for his dark, rolling style, going on to become one of the biggest DJ’s in the scene. Primarily known for his mixing talents, Randall is also an underrated producer with credits on classics such as his and Andy C’s ‘Sound Control’, and the head of label Mac2 alongside long time friend Cool Hand Flex.

Enjoy hearing him go to work on Hyp 168 - a relentless procession of bangers, the mix is a history lesson from one of the most qualified teachers around...

Hyp 165: Kid Drama

Damon Kirkham likes an alias, that much is clear. Formerly one half of Instra:mental (along with Al 'Boddika' Green), he operated as Kid Drama, before employing the Jon Convex moniker around the time the duo split around 2011. Details of the split remain sparse to this day, but what is apparent is that the sepration hasn't stopped the flow of quality music being released by Kirkham. Always operating with a sonic pallete that took note from - but didn't exclusively sitck to - Drum n Bass, he's now focusing on his output as Kid Drama, teaming up with former Autonomic collaborator d-Bridge as Heart Drive for a series of podcasts and some new material. With the podcasts focusing on a glitchy half-step and synth heavy electronica, it would appear Heart Drive is a new exciting chapter in Kirkham's perennially forward facing musical career.

Tracklist free, Hyp 165 takes in all facets of Kirkham's career, travelling from his Autonomic days to the present day revival of Kid Drama. Jungle, Footwork, Half-Step and DnB all fit in seamlessly as Kirkham keeps the quality throughout for an hour's worth of music that refuses to sit still for a single second.
