New BREAK on WARM COMMUNICATIONS

Vibing off of light, layered keys and female R&B coos, Break gives us a rolling five minutes of pure A-side. Not to be lost in the air, a thickly chopped break plays overtop sub bass as filter resonances enter at the offsides, carefully touching on the interplay of voice and gated percussion. This is a rattling piece that's as much deep house as it is liquid step.

Break's take on Mako's recent Billie Holiday homage bounces its bass and hi-freq drums between two densely layered snare notes. Splices of tape-delayed voice dither off into an empty jazz-space, leaving a heavy analog-sounding synth, motes of vinyl dust and a closing section that fades just before returning to the tonicó ready for the final phase of your mix.

It comes out in September, look out for it at all your favourite music outlets.

SPEAR051: BCee - Lost & Found LP

Following on from the success of BCee’s debut LP ‘Beat The System’, ‘Lost & Found’ is BCee’s best and more personal work so far. Title track ‘Lost & Found’ and 140bpm ‘Into The Blue’ feature rising star Rocky Nti, who you may be familiar with as the front man for Jakwob live and the this years underground anthem ‘Blinding’ which was also remixed by BCee.

Meanwhile,‘Back To The Street’ and ‘In The Shadows’ feature the amazing voice of Philippa Hanna, who as a solo artist has just finished her first stadium tour as support of the legendary Lionel Richie. Finally, stepping up and injecting his own classic jungle sounds into ‘In The Shadows’ and ‘Fatal Attraction’ is the mighty Bladerunner (Ram / Dread / V Recordings) whose sound works surprisingly well alongside BCee’s musical goodness.

It drops on Aug 25 2013, this is one album you don't want to miss!

FLOEX - Pocustone

Here's something you don't usually see on these pages. Tomáš Dvořák aka Floex - clarinetist, composer, producer and multimedia artist from Prague (Czech Republic) - specializes in jazz tinged electronic music. On this album (originally released in 2001), he mixes intricate songs with a set of short, experimental soundscapes. It's miles away from the hullaballoo of bass music we usually feature in these pages. But - and I can't stress this enough - this album is something you should really take some time to listen to and let it all sink in. The melodies are gorgeous, equal parts Cinematic Orchestra and Bonobo but done in a style uniquely his own. Listen to the samples below, and get buying.

The flipside Antact is just as good, a blinder with its heavy kicks and twisted melodies. Out on vinyl on April 15, this is - we assure you - is not one you should miss.

ASC - Proton / Electron [PUSHING RED]

ASC fans, here's something to look forward to. The Auxiliary boss fires his second offering on Pushing Red and it's one of his best releases yet.

A fantastic follow up to his debut on the label, this one shows off his versatility and brilliance at crafting techno themed soundscapes. Proton starts off with chest thumping kicks and a clever undulating bassline as in true ASC fashion. Blips & bleeps weave in and out of the background before the snare drops in to take the track onwards. On the flipside, Electron is another deep techno piece - a solid 4/4 keeps the momentum strong with pulsating bass and smooth melodies.

Full of radical dynamics and drama - this is one slab of plastic that leaves you giddy and wanting more. Out on Jan 28 2013 at all good outlets - go seek.

Bungle - Astral Travel / Aura [SOUL: R SOULR60]

Word is that Soul:R boss Marcus Intalex asked Brazilian producer Bungle to make a tune for Soul:R. No pressure and no limitation, the former said.
But the results is nothing short of sublime. Intalex has gone on record to say Bungle's contribution "is the best Soul:R 12" there has been for a long time".

And we couldn't agree more. For months now Astral Travel and Aura have been turning heads in Intalex's DJ sets all over the world as soon as they are played, with people rushing to find out what these tunes are.

No wonder. From what we've heard, this first single from Soul:R for 2013 sets the bar high with its melancholic yet optimistic vibes. Unfortunately it all finishes all too soon, leaving you wanting more.

Out soon at all good music outlets.

Ingredients Records

Former chef and now owner of Ingredients Records out of the UK, Clive Psylence is also the director and artist agent at Evolution Artists, responsible for booking tours of top-flight drum & bass DJs like veteran junglists Total Science to young upstart Villem.

While Clive may claim his cooking is miles better than his jokes, the 37-year-old's tastes in music cannot be faulted. Since forming Ingredients in 2009, the label has made a name for itself for its consistent quality, releasing music from brand new artists Skeptical, Jubei, Koto and Sato, amongst others.

On Sept 17 2012, the label will release the Mise En Place EP (pronounced [miz on plas], French for "putting in place") made up of a remix by dBridge, a remix of Foreign Concept by Villem and two originals by Mark Recoil & Kinetic and Stealth & Stylus.

Ahead of that release, Clive took time out of his busy schedule to answer some pressing questions. He also tells us of his dream - to produce the first drum & bass themed cook book. Read on...

Ingredients Records had its first release in 2009 and has since made a name for quality drum & bass. What drove you to start the label in the first place?

I had been into this scene since around 1991 & tried a few avenues to work within it including DJ'ing & production but it clicked one day that i felt my strengths lay in A & R so I decided to start Ingredients.

It's worked out well and I think it's been a combination of good music and a refreshing approach to running a label. I was willing to put out music by anyone who i felt was writing good music, wasn't deterred by lack of profile & also Itreated the producers with respect. I educated them on the whole process including taking them to mastering at Metropolis. I think my reputation was good & I got an abundance of people wanting to be on the label.

Indeed, Ingredients has become a platform for breaking some of the best new producers around right now - Dub Phizix, Jubei and Mode being a few names to first gain notice via your label. Why take that risk and how do you manage to keep the quality so high?

Well it has worked out to be the case, and is something i really value. I can't take all the credit but I've certainly played my part in the progression of a load of new producers & the reason I do it is genuine. I felt the genre needed more labels taking risks, it was very hard for new guys to break in and some of them are really talented, so i wanted to put energy into that side of it all & try to make people realise just how much good drum & bass was getting over looked.

Uncovering raw talent is definitely a commitment. Do you spend a lot of time listening to demos? What's the process behind deciding on a release?

Yeah I'd say that's been the key part really, actually listening to it all. But you have to believe in your own decisions and I go through an elimination process until i get from say 100 demos to 10, then it's where i decide if to proceed with any of them or scrap the lot. I won't tell you what I'd look out for as that'd be giving away my secret, but one word i'd use is 'longevity'.

At one point there was a focus on more of the ‘minimal’ half step styles on your label. Did it worry you, being pigeonholed that way?

Yes it did, but drum & bass does go in waves and you couldn't escape the amount of minimal that was being made. I signed one 12" by Mode & it opened the flood gates! But my interpretation of minimal may be different to others, i wouldn't say Skeptical & Dub Phizix is minimal for example. I also signed tracks by Dub One & dRamatic & dbAudio to keep away from that bracket and everything i was releasing was selling similar units so I felt the fan base was just believing in the label.

These days Ingredients is often cited as one of the best new labels at the moment. Looking back, what do think is the secret behind your label's success?

Is it? I've not really ever felt that, although I'm obviously loving the music I sign & to be honest i don't play much other drum & bass tunes in my sets. As i said earlier, i do look for longevity in the tunes, try not to sound like from a particular era but i think involving people from the artists to the consumers has played a big part in it's momentum.

That said, I'd never felt any pressure because i was just getting sent so many good tunes. But it did eventually come when i released Skeptical's 'Blue Eyes EP' That record is so amazing, it made me realise i needed to follow that. But i stick to the same principles of releasing music I think is good and not looking at who is doing well in the sales charts & all that carry on.

Your upcoming release certainly seems like an ambitious project...

Yeah well I was originally going to do a 2nd Recipe Book album, but i looked at how many d&b albums were coming in the next 3-6 months I just thought the concept of the album was getting a bit rinsed out! So we decided to pick out 8 of the best tunes i had & release over 2 EPs. I'm really excited about both of them especially the Kinetic & Mark Recoil tune, that's Ingredients down to a tee.

What else have you got lined up for Ingredients for the rest of 2012? Any full length projects in the pipeline?

Up after the EP is the 1st Ruffhouse 12" - The Foot / Bypass in October, then it's a 12" from arguably one of the best d&b producers of the last 10 years Marcus Intalex in November. That will be followed by another Ruffhouse 12' (new outfit signed exclusively to Ingredients) in December & 'Mise en place pt2' around January.

Now to the million dollar question, one of the most distinguishing features of each Ingredients release is the recipe card. It is a well known fact you were a chef previously but what made you decide to include receipes in your releases in the first place?

Yeah that idea came from a chat with Breakage. I told him the label name and he suggested putting a recipe on the sleeve, which was too expensive so the idea was adapted! But the point of it really was to get people to notice the label. So many of them around, the music is fairly deep compared to many so what could make it stand out, because the music was good, so the recipes did the trick. Sadly i stopped them from RECIPE022 due to cost and the fact it was so hard getting the producers to do them!

Mind you, Jubei's lamb shanks were really good! But I don't want to upset anyone haha. But some day, I i will do a recipe book one day including all the d&b artists that contributed, will be great to look back on, especially for those doing really well now too.

Blu Mar Ten - Love is the Devil Remixes

The third and final installment of the Love is the Devil Remixes is out today, featuring reworkings from Spearhead Records boss BCee and Ukrainian boy wonder Sunchase. Accentuating the original’s choral and melodic components, Bcee blends a brand new vocal line into shimmering synths and melancholy keys, underpinning it all with his trademark ultra-warm bass work and loping breaks sprinkled with vinyl crackle. Meanwhile, Sunchase takes Damage in a significantly darker and direction, piling growling bass on top of growling bass before lashing out the breaks. Whispering voices haunt the breakdown before giving way to dark metal stabs and a frenetic drop to die for.Excellent reworkings both of them, this is one for the collection. Go seek.

Until Silence

Until Silence - RED010
A. That Shine
AA. Hands Tied
Out in all stores June 11, 2012

Until Silence's second offering for Pushing Red are two slices of funkiness cutting a swathe through house, techno and future soul. That Shine is clearly the stand out track, a dance floor pleaser with its pulsating kicks and weaving acid lines. Flipside Hands Tied is equally sumptuous: A piece of blissed out 4/4 funk built around soulful vocals. Polished yet seductive, this is irresistible.

Instra:mental 'Resolution 653'

Instra:mental 'Resolution 653' Album audio clips Nonplus Records by stholdings

Resolution 653 will be released on Vinyl , CD & Digital download. The 3x12” Vinyl and Download card shrinkwrapped inside. Instra:mental have completed their debut album and there’s no better home for it than their own firmly established label Nonplus+. Having made a name for themselves over the last few years as avant-garde, forward thinking producers who set trends instead of following, they lay down a full length album showcasing where their productions are at now rather than being a summary of where they’ve come from.
First off we get a taste of the album on the sampler with electro x juke style tracks ‘Thomp’ and ‘When I Dip” which have both been savaging dance floors worldwide over the last few months in the sets of DJs such as Loefah, Addison Groove and Benji B amongst others. Moving on to the full
LP we are treated to the complete gamut of Instra:mental’s ability. Tracks like ‘Aggro Acid’ and ‘Talkin Mono’ give us crude analogue acid modulation at its rawest that twists and gurgles across the sound spectrum with mesmeric manipulation, whilst others such as ‘Memory Implant’, ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Plok’ take us deep into synth arrangements that have become synonymous with their name.

They Live - Cancel Standard [EXITLP007] Exit Records

They Live - Cancel Standard [EXITLP007] Exit Records *LP Preview* by stholdings

Released on 12" Vinyl / CD on 28th March 2011.

Exit Records bring a new project to the table with a collaboration between Consequence and Joe Seven. Consequence made his debut on Exit in 2009 with his highly acclaimed album ‘Live For Never’ capturing the attention of electronica fans world-wide with his organic and unique take on Drum n Bass. Also having been a staple part of the Autonomic camp since day one, he’s slowly but surely developing his sound and delving deeper into the unknown. This time he teams up with another new Exit artist Joe Seven (who has an imminent solo single) and together they have created the They Live alias to showcase what happens when these two minds meet in the studio.
The album is very much intended to be listened to in the order it has been presented, as a whole body of music meant to capture your senses and lead you across a soundscape of atmospheres, textures, differing tempos and a variety of percussion elements.
In the same way as a silent movie can stimulate your sense of hearing, Cancel Standard does the opposite like an imageless movie, giving you the soundtrack and letting you imagine your own visual elements. Each track sets its own scene that is part of the bigger picture, creating a body of music that can offer the listener detachment from their immediate surroundings and escapism into an alternate reality.

Various Artists - Mosaic Volume One [Exit Records]

The amount of excellent tunes featured on this compilation is ridiculous: Yes, dBridge's Exit label is now a by-word for quality music. This compilation alone features quality tunes from upcoming producers such as Indigo, Synkro, alongside established names such as Commix, and Skream. Absolutely essential.
