Photek - Slowburn

Via XLR8R: Well, it certainly has been a while since we've heard from UK jungle pioneer Photek. Now he is ready to make his 2011 resurgence with a new EP, Avalanche, set for release in February of next year. Slowburn is the first track released from said EP and presents itself as the veteran producer's step into new territory, one defined by slower tempos, heavy bass, and aggressive drums.

XLR8R Podcast - Terror Danjah

This week, XLR8R brings in grime grandaddy Terror Danjah, who's been in the game for nearly a decade, but still has plenty to bring to the table. We profiled Terror Danjah in the current issue of XLR8R, and his still-fresh album, Undeniable, released last month on Hyperdub, showcased the prolific producer's unmatched ability to consistently re-write the grime formula in new and interesting ways. As for this mix, Terror Danjah leans heavily on his own productions, but also weaves in efforts from like-minded beatmakers such as D.O.K, Royal T, and TRC. It's also not shy about vocal tracks, as the hyperactive flows of Wiley, Tempz, D Double E, and several others all feature prominently.

Tron: Legacy

Been listening... nay... have been to geeking out to Daft Punk's soundtrack to the upcoming Tron: Legacy. Suffice to say, its's a stomper especially since their last few albums were - to be really honest - frightfully ho-hum.

This soundtrack, however, is destined to be a future classic (in fact, I have not been excited about a Daft Punk release since I first heard Da Funk on some compilation ages ago). If you like good music you will love this, period. Adagio for Tron, a cut from the 22 track album, is one of the many stand-outs - imagine if you will a sweeping orchestral score (think Han Zimmer and James Newton Howard's work on The Dark Knight)crossed with stirring electronics and you won't be far off.

It's classical meets cyberpunk, as one review puts it - perfect then to soundtrack the long-awaited sequel to Tron.

Culture Mob's Debbie Tharp said it's a massive undertaking for two musicians moving from two synthesizers and a drum machine to a 90 piece orchestra but Daft Punk pulled it off effortlessly. We agree... now go seek the album.

LWE Podcast 68: Morphosis

The Greek word “morphosis” means “the overall knowledge and learning,” which makes it an ideal moniker for Rabih Beaini. Not unlike his home in Lebanon, the producer’s bespoke brand of techno brings together the influences of Western dance tracks, jazzy improvisation, traditional, audience-fed Arab music and the very atmosphere around him. This blend appears in his rich and unexpected tone choices, the sweeping rhythms echoing natural patterns, itchy percussion timbres and droning sonics that have appeared on M>O>S Recordings, Delsin, Styrax Leaves, and his own Morphine Records. Focusing more on his music than its promotion, he offered Little White Ear Buds two exclusive podcasts to help draw the year to a close. The first is a mix recorded in Berlin that stitches together Beaini’s disparate tastes for synth-rock and reggae, outre techno and free jazz with his own work. The second is taken from a live set recorded at the Intergalactic FM Amsterdam Dance Event, an intimate and compelling look at how Morphosis navigates his own unique soundscapes.

RA.237 Perc

Perc is currently enjoying some much deserved limelight on the global techno scene, but it's been a slog. The London-based producer (real name Ali Wells) has been putting out records since 2002, although him and his Perc Trax imprint only truly hit their stride these last few years. The start of this purple patch also seems to be traceable: Wells released the sizable Up single through Kompakt Extra in 2007 and has since signed material to labels like Drumcode, CLR, Ovum and, more recently, Stroboscopic Artefacts. It's on home soil where he's shined brightest, though. Both as an A&R and producer, Wells' ear for dark and club-ready techno has seen Perc Trax's stock rise exponentially, giving a platform to artists like Forward Strategy Group and Ben Gibson. On his mix for us, Wells offers both an indication of the Perc/Perc Trax aesthetic and some context—Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle—as to its experimental influences.

Instra:mental have just announced their debut album, Resolution 653, will be released on April 4th 2011 on their Nonplus+ label.

Here's a preview of an upcoming track by the duo:



"You can expect a wide range of styles, from 110bpm up to 135bpm, on the album," they say. "We just went with what we were feeling at the time, that's all we've ever done in the studio. So we hope you all like the results!"

Before that, look out for an album by LOL called Me Me on Nonplus+ on February 28th. LOL is rumoured to be drum & bass producer Mistabishi and as yet unknown female colleague.

Scuba - Dubstep Takeover [Hotflush Recordings Special] (BBC 1Xtra) (10-12-2010)

One of the key figures in crossing the sounds of techno and dubstep, Paul Rose aka Scuba has been shaping the scene as one of the pivotal figures on the triple B axis of Bristol, Berlin and bass - running Hotflush Records in Bristol, running the Sub:stance night at Berlin's Berghain club, and bringing plenty of bass in either case.

For the Radio 1Xtra Dubstep Takeover, Scuba brings a heavy-weight selection with mixes from Sepalcure, Boddika, and George Fitzgerald, as well as getting on the decks himself. And if that wasn't enough, Joy Orbison and Mount Kimbie dropped by for a chat. If you want to hear a selection of tracks from across the dubstep/bass music spectrum, this is the show for you.

FACT mix 207: DJ Roc

This FACT mix comes from a stalwart of Chicago’s juke and footwork circles, DJ Roc. Real name Clarence Johnson, DJ Roc is Chicago born and bred and has been making juke house since 2001, forming the Bosses of the Circle crew mid-way through the last decade. Their parties and Juke City series of mixtapes are legendary, and this year Roc’s production career was celebrated with an extensive release on Planet Mu, titled The Crack Capone.

RA.EX010 Magda / Marc Houle

Two of Minus' key members chat at length about their history and their new albums. Over the past ten years, few techno labels have drawn as much attention as M-nus, the Berlin-based crew of expatriates led by DJ and producer Richie Hawtin. Among the label's most well-known members are Magda and Marc Houle. From their teenage years playing parties in Detroit, to their stadium-sized gigs during 2008’s Contakt tour, these two artists helped define the lean and punchy sound that came to be known as minimal. Both are currently on the road together promoting new albums. Houle's Drift features lengthy guitar-centric techno experiments, while Magda's From the Fallen Page translates her fascination with horror soundtracks into the same framework.

The London artist also known as Sara Abdel-Hamid will shortly bring to an end the busiest year to date of her musical career, a year that saw her release her debut album Contact, Love, Want, Have on Hyperdub, deliver a string of remixes for labels like Planet Mu, Night Slugs, Thisisnotanexit and LuckyMe, constantly tour and, last but not least, start up Hum & Buzz, the record label she runs with Optimum.

Next year Ikonika plans to focus on the label, and her FACT mix features a slew of forthcoming Hum & Buzz material from Optimum, Dro Carey and herself, as well as new dubplates from Deep Teknologi, Bok Bok and more.
