FACT MIX 453: IKONIKA

A key cog in the Hyperdub machine, Ikonika steps up for her second FACT mix.

Since debuting with ‘Please’ in 2008, Ikonika has not just become a key part of the Hyperdub stable, but one of the UK’s most reliable producers – developing her early, sample-led bleep sound into a more fully-fleshed, hardware-driven aesthetic over the last half-decade. Although her studio set-up – as she showed FACT TV recently – has expanded in recent years, her music’s never fallen into the trap of mixdowns over hooks, and her latest EP Position is as rich in melody as anything she’s done before.

She also only seems to get better as a DJ. Loosely speaking, her sets revolve around r’n'b, grime, house and techno, but even when pulling the floor out from a 4×4 pulse (as she does several times in this mix), they never feel disjointed – instead, she’s one of the best around at working club dynamics to their maximum.

FACT mix 206 - Ikonika

The London artist also known as Sara Abdel-Hamid will shortly bring to an end the busiest year to date of her musical career, a year that saw her release her debut album Contact, Love, Want, Have on Hyperdub, deliver a string of remixes for labels like Planet Mu, Night Slugs, Thisisnotanexit and LuckyMe, constantly tour and, last but not least, start up Hum & Buzz, the record label she runs with Optimum.

Next year Ikonika plans to focus on the label, and her FACT mix features a slew of forthcoming Hum & Buzz material from Optimum, Dro Carey and herself, as well as new dubplates from Deep Teknologi, Bok Bok and more. XLR8R Podcast: IKONIKA

As the sounds emanating from London continue to morph faster than people like us can slap a proper genre name on them, and the number of producers and DJs involved in this funky/garage/bass music movement continues to grow, it seems like there are very few constants in the UK's electronic music scene. So when Ikonika (a.k.a. Sara Abdel-Hamid) dropped Contact, Love, Want, Have, her debut album and one of only a handful of full-length efforts on Hyperdub (the others belonging to Burial and label head Kode9), it qualified as a genuine big deal. She's put together this exclusive XLR8R podcast that was mixed live and includes all kinds of dubplates and unreleased goodies.
