Music, to be quite honest, only took hold in Kenny Larkin's life because his fledgling stand-up career didn't take off in the way that he had hoped. The Detroit DJ/producer moved to California in the early '00s to trade strobe light for spotlight. It's not hard to blame him. Often forgotten behind the bigger names of Detroit's second wave, it seemingly took a well-timed reissue of early work from Rush Hour and an excellent new full-length for Planet E in 2008 for audiences to realize the breadth of his catalogue and his continued relevance.
So, even as he slowly makes moves towards shifting out of music and into a career in Hollywood, the allure of music is still undeniable for the veteran DJ/producer. As RA's Todd L. Burns found out in conversation late last month, things are going too well for Larkin to give up the creature comforts that music provides. Especially considering one of the last times that Larkin got onstage in Los Angeles, he bombed. The time before that? He was arrested only hours before his gig. Find a priest, a rabbi, a minister and settle in at the bar. This is our funniest Exchange yet.

Resolution 653 will be released on Vinyl , CD & Digital download. The 3x12” Vinyl and Download card shrinkwrapped inside. Instra:mental have completed their debut album and there’s no better home for it than their own firmly established label Nonplus+. Having made a name for themselves over the last few years as avant-garde, forward thinking producers who set trends instead of following, they lay down a full length album showcasing where their productions are at now rather than being a summary of where they’ve come from. First off we get a taste of the album on the sampler with electro x juke style tracks ‘Thomp’ and ‘When I Dip” which have both been savaging dance floors worldwide over the last few months in the sets of DJs such as Loefah, Addison Groove and Benji B amongst others. Moving on to the full LP we are treated to the complete gamut of Instra:mental’s ability. Tracks like ‘Aggro Acid’ and ‘Talkin Mono’ give us crude analogue acid modulation at its rawest that twists and gurgles across the sound spectrum with mesmeric manipulation, whilst others such as ‘Memory Implant’, ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Plok’ take us deep into synth arrangements that have become synonymous with their name.
Method One "Ghost Notes VIP" [FREE 320k Download] by Method One Via Method One: To celebrate reaching 2,000 followers on Soundcloud, here's another FREE tune to download and (hopefully) enjoy! A little background: "Ghost Notes" was originally released on ASC's Covert Operations label back in 2003, and I made this modernized VIP mix in late 2009.
Renowned for his impeccable drum programming, Photek had already been releasing singles for several years when, in 1997, he released Modus Operandi, his legendary first album and a record remarkable as much for its atmosphere, restraint and measured, ice-tipped grooves as its potential to send dancefloors wild. 2011 has seen Photek back with a vengeance that fans haven’t seen in years, releasing a new EP this month, Avalanche, and working on remixes for Daft Punk and Ray LaMontagne as well commissioning mixes of his own material by Boddika, Breach and Addison Groove. According to his people, there’s more new Photek material to come, and so what better time for aFACTmix than now.

Zul (Subvert HQ, Singapore) has been DJing and promoting parties in the Lion City since the 1990s, performing along side the likes of dBridge, DJ Friction, Joe Syntax, Stamina MC, John B, A-Sides, Pendulum, Cyantific, Sonic, London Elektricity as well as Logistics and Hospital Records' Chris Goss. Gigs-wise, its gone from Hong Kong (he spent time with the White Label crew in 2001), Jakarta to London (playing at the legendary Hospitality parties in Shoreditch, UK) with bits of radio (MediaCorp Radio's Lush 99.5FM Clubscape sessions, to be exact) and a release on Take Off Records squeezed in between.
When not busy with his day job as a journalist in Singapore, Zul also keeps it cutting edge away from the dance floor with the Subvert Sessions Podcast (download via subverthq.blogspot.sg), blending together leftfield and idiosyncratic beats of the 170bpm variety.
