Data Transmission Mix of the Day: Uncle Dugs

We were going to say mixes were like buses with two coming along at once this afternoon but then we realised that that particularly laboured analogy just wasn’t going to cut it in this instance. We mean, it was that long ago since we dropped our last exclusive mix on you lucky lot with this week seeing our hallowed pages already harbour the talents of The Drifter, Matt Fear & Kreature and Glaswegian techno aficionado Harvey McKay.

Now we’ve got all that bragging out of the way let us accompany our unveiling of an extra special mix from DT favourite Matthew Dear (courtesy of our friends over at RBMA) with our second exclusive mix of the day as Uncle Dugs provides you with another fresh selection of cuts for you to wrap your ears around ahead of his performance this weekend for Back To 95 at London’s Great Suffolk Street Warehouse. Turn it up!

Hyp 168: Randall

This week on Hyp 168, a true master of his craft unloads an hour of classics on you. An ambassador for Jungle since its conception, Randall is held in the highest esteem across the genre as one of the finest DJ’s to ever rinse out an Amen break. A resident at two of the most legendary parties of the 90′s in AWOL (A Way Of Life) and Metalheadz’s Sunday Session at Hoxton’s Blue Note, Randall became famous for his dark, rolling style, going on to become one of the biggest DJ’s in the scene. Primarily known for his mixing talents, Randall is also an underrated producer with credits on classics such as his and Andy C’s ‘Sound Control’, and the head of label Mac2 alongside long time friend Cool Hand Flex.

Enjoy hearing him go to work on Hyp 168 - a relentless procession of bangers, the mix is a history lesson from one of the most qualified teachers around...

XLR8R Podcast 318: Special Request

It's not often that an already successful artist comes up with a new alias and sees their career trajectory suddenly jump to another level, but that's exactly what seems to have happened to Paul Woolford. For more than a decade, the UK producer has been releasing a steady stream of well-received music, both under his own name and a variety of monikers, including Bobby Peru, Hip Therapist, and Skip Donahue. Still, at the start of 2012, he was still generally known as Paul Woolford, respectable and reliable techno producer. It wasn't until he began making hardcore- and jungle-referencing music as Special Request that things started to change. Initially issuing a series of white-label 12"s, the project was eventually snapped up by the young Houndstooth, which has just released the first Special Request LP, Soul Music. Coming at a time when nostalgia for the pirate-radio era and a renewed interest in jungle and drum & bass appears to be surging, Special Request has quite simply exploded, placing Woolford on a bigger stage than ever before. Given that, it seemed like the perfect time for the veteran producer to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. To be clear, this is most definitely a Special Request—and not a Paul Woolford—podcast; right off the bat, it delves into the breakneck rhythms of jungle and keeps the throttle floored for more than an hour. Bringing together both vintage cuts and newer productions, Woolford makes a compelling case for the genre's vibrancy before wrapping things up with a noisy bit of sonic exploration from Alva Noto. He's clearly tapped into something potent with Special Request, and it's fascinating to document his ascent.

Solid Steel Radio Show [28/6/2013] - Congo Natty

Solid Steel welcomes Congo Natty, a well respected and legendary figure in British music who had his first release as Rebel MC in 1988, the same year Solid Steel started.

Chart success followed alongside Double Trouble, but he's probably most respected as one of the pioneers of Jungle. Will Ashon from Big Dada talks to him about his extensive career, his new album 'Jungle Revolution' and we get to hear a few classic records that have influenced him over the years. That is followed by a 'Congo Natty live 95' recording that features Ragga Twins, Navigator, MC Dett and DJ SL. Junglist massive, fall in!

Guest Mix By Law "Deep Jungle 1993-1996"

Via Two Hungry Ghosts:

The second inguest mix series features a brand new set from vinyl collector, blogger and drum and bass authority Law. Here he captures a time that we are extremely passionate about, deep jungle from 1993-1996.

He says: "There was a period (roughly) between 1993 to 96 where jungle was not only atmospheric or dark, but it had an other worldly, sci-fi feel. Labels like Deejay, Lucky Spin, Legend, Timeless, Rugged Vinyl and others captured this spacey, blissed-out vibe. A quality that now seems more or less extinct within the contemporary drum and bass scene. I tried to select tunes for this mix that represent the broad spectrum of this sound. With brooding, dark tracks like 'Fury' and 'Genesis Project' to the more calming, deep sounds of 'Intalect' and 'Traveling Pt 2'.
There is a feeling of nervous mystery and wonder to these tunes, as if they could be the soundtrack to that part of a sci-fi film where the human protagonists discover a new world, a mystery accelerated by the fact that these sounds now only exist in the past."

XLR8R Podcast 280: Ulrich Schnauss

Although XLR8R covers many different corners of the electronic spectrum, it's fair to say that we've haven't been paying a whole lot of attention to drum & bass as of late. That being said, we still have a soft spot for the genre's heyday, and it appears we're not alone. Ulrich Schnauss may be best known for the serene, shoegaze-flavored electronic soundscapes he's been turning out for more than a decade, but when we asked the German veteran to participate in our podcast series, he elected to eschew his signature style and instead delve into his past. The result? A 78-minute offering he's calling Drift to the Centre: Deep Atmospheric DnB from the Golden Age, a mix which also happens to represent the largest spotlight XLR8R has shone on drum & bass in quite some time. In fairness, before Schnauss began releasing music under his own name in the early '00s and cooking up melody-rich pieces of pastoral electronic pop, he was crafting ambient drum & bass as Ethereal 77 and View to the Future, making this podcast a sort of return to his roots. It's a bit of an unexpected left turn, but given that his new album, A Long Way to Fall, is arguably Schnauss' most varied effort to date, it seems that the producer has perhaps reached a point where he's looking to surprise people.

As its ornate title suggests, the podcast is full of mid-'90s classics; it's a celebration of the pre-techstep era, a time when drum & bass world—or at least a sizable portion of it—celebrated deep, soulful grooves and rolling jazz rhythms. It may not sound like Schnauss' modern-day output, but its chilled vibes and relaxing effect are certainly similar.

Track list:

01 Photek "T-Raenon" (Op-ART)
02 David Holmes "Gone (PFM Remix)" (Go! Discs)

05 Lee & Gwange "2 Deep" (Legend)
06 Motive One "Life" (Certificate 18)
07 Neil Trix & Danny Mills "Pearls" (Bang-In Tunes)
08 MI5 "Experience" (Lucky Spin)
09 Odyssey "Expressions" (720 Degrees)
10 Source Direct "Secret Liaison" (Good Looking)
11 Seba "Planetary Funk Alert" (Looking Good)

20 best - FACT mixes of 2010

via FACT:
The most heavily downloaded of the last twelve months was Autechre’s FACT mix 122, followed closely by Four Tet’s FACT mix 182, but of course these two heavy-hitters are just the tip of a huge and all-singing, all-dancing iceberg. We’ve now chosen our own favourite FACT mixes of the year, the ones that’s never left the stereo, the ones that just kept on giving. Over the next two pages you can see which exactly made the grade, and listen to all of ‘em via the wondrous technology that is Mixcloud.

Some other favourites...

Addison Groove is, in fact, an alias of Headhunter, a dubstep mainstay who’s released a multitude of singles for Tempa as well as an album for the label, Nomad. He’s been playing Chicago juke in his DJ sets for a while now, and his work as Addison Groove is where that influence is allowed to come to the forefront, with stripped down drum machine beats, acid basslines and hip-hop / booty-leaning vocals.

Hyperdub boss Kode 9 is one of the world’s best DJs – his extended sets at Plastic People last year are spoken of with pure reverence, and this year he’s let out specialist mixes in 2step and “sino-grime”. Here he contributes a mix of “mostly ’94-’96 jungle”, bound by an icy, misty quality. Lemon D, DJ SS, Undercover Agent and more feature.

Ah yes, Peverelist’s FACT mix. It was “recorded live with two turntables and a bag o’ acetate” just last week, and is “choc full of exclusives”.

FACT mix 199: Mosca

This edition of the FACT mix – the 199th episode in the series – is a marathon session from one of the most rewarding artists to emerge from the UK this year, Mosca.

Picked as one of our producers to watch back in January, Mosca opened 2010 with the first release on Night Slugs (‘Square One’, backed with the epic ‘Nike’), and one of the highlights of Fabric’s Elevator Music compilation in ‘Gold Bricks, I See You’. A propulsive remix of Four Tet followed, along with hip-hop tempo neck-snapper ‘Tilt Shift’ (forthcoming on Fat City), and listeners to his or Jackmaster’s recent sets will have already heard ‘Got Me Wrong’, a Niche-indebted rush that’s so larger-than-life it reloads itself. Seriously.

The best thing about Mosca’s discography so far is that none of these tunes sound particularly alike; whereas many producers are happy to make their name with a distinctive sound and then milk it for all its worth, Mosca’s already proved hard to pin down after a year on the radar. This week sees the release of one of his most satisfying productions to date, his remix of T. Williams and Terri Walker’s ‘Heartbeat’, which combines lounge house flavours with broken beat, a cut-up vocal climax and an outrageously fat bassline.

To celebrate, he’s worked overtime on this FACT mix, a dizzying 56-tracks-in-100-minutes affair which spans juke, jungle, hip-hop, dancehall, grime, techno and bassline, with new tracks from Pearson Sound, Jay Weed, Spooky and Girl Unit as well as himself. You can both stream and download the mix via Soundcloud below; to download simply click the arrow on the right hand side of the player.
