Campfire Stories is a mix series by friends of Silent Season. The focus of the series is on storytelling through deeper electronic music. Artists weave together narratives using the emotional characteristics of ambient and techno music.This set was recorded at the Decibel Festival in Seattle, Washington on Friday, September 26 2014 at the EMP Museum.

FACT MIX 453: IKONIKA

A key cog in the Hyperdub machine, Ikonika steps up for her second FACT mix.

Since debuting with ‘Please’ in 2008, Ikonika has not just become a key part of the Hyperdub stable, but one of the UK’s most reliable producers – developing her early, sample-led bleep sound into a more fully-fleshed, hardware-driven aesthetic over the last half-decade. Although her studio set-up – as she showed FACT TV recently – has expanded in recent years, her music’s never fallen into the trap of mixdowns over hooks, and her latest EP Position is as rich in melody as anything she’s done before.

She also only seems to get better as a DJ. Loosely speaking, her sets revolve around r’n'b, grime, house and techno, but even when pulling the floor out from a 4×4 pulse (as she does several times in this mix), they never feel disjointed – instead, she’s one of the best around at working club dynamics to their maximum.

FACT MIX 432: LUKE VIBERT

Luke Vibert has been releasing music since the early ’90s, drawing from the approach and aesthetics of UK hardcore, hip-hop and acid house, and charting a course across several pseudonyms – including Wagon Christ and Plug, two of Vibert’s most celebrated projects that are still trucking today (both released records - Toomorrow and Back On Time, respectively – as recently as 2011).

Vibert has long been a slave to acid house, even championing the We Love Acid clubnight featured in FACT last week (named after a 2003 single of Vibert’s, ‘I Love Acid’), and Ridmik is described as a “very personal project”, with the TB-303 “providing a common thread throughout the eleven tracks”.

Vibert’s FACT mix isn’t quite acid all the way, but it does draw from oddball electro, classic hip-hop and, yes, 303 funk – the sort of things that Vibert fans are sure to love.

Hypercolour will release Ridmik on April 7 2014.

FACT mix 421 - Akkord (Jan '14)

Originally designed as an anonymous project – though Akkord’s identity was eventually revealed as Apollo-associated producers Synkro and Indigo – Akkord introduced themselves with a brace of self-released 12″s in 2012. In truth, it felt like the group hadn’t found their identity at that point: those singles took cues from some of the underground’s most hyped acts (James Blake, Burial, Instra:mental) but although the surgical approach Akkord took to incorporating those acts’ characteristics was impressive, it didn’t exactly feel new – especially when presented anon.

Fast-forward a year, however, and the group’s self-titled album and preceding Navigate EP are doing serious damage. Precision-tooled music that draws from drum’n'bass, techno, Autechre and dubstep without ever quite feeling like it’s conforming to one genre, Akkord may have been overshadowed by the group’s labelmate Special Request in the publicity stakes, but it’s proving to be one of Fabric’s Houndstooth label’s sharpest moves.

Tool aside, there’s few surprises in the track list for Akkord’s FACT mix – let’s face it, it makes total sense that the group are fans of Muslimgauze, Andy Stott, ASC, Xhin and Felix K – but the way that it’s presented, with these tracks forming a whole like melted-down metals, is seriously something. It really feels like an extension of the album – download it now.

Steve Foulds - Polar EP

Steve Foulds calls upon his wealth of experience from within the realms of techno, house and dub-techno to bring us two slowly evolving deep techno masterpieces. The aptly named Polar EP is Steve's first release in three years, and his Cut debut.

Fans of Rod Modell's projects such as Deepchord and Echospace as well as those who appreciate artists such as Quantec, Bvdub, Deadbeat and Efdemin are all likely to find something within these tracks to relate to, and hopefully discover something new at the same time.

Steve also runs the excellent online resource ADSR Sounds (including MassiveSynth.com) where music producers can find presets, sounds, patches, samples and video courses.

Origami Sound Podcast #12: Kalli

The first raw & coarse sound enthusiast from Origami Sound's overseas collective, Kalli of Manchester brings you a great example of techno craft that combines a few of his own abrasive tracks with contemporary dark club bangers, but we bet you'll have a hard time telling the difference. These days he's constantly gigging alongside big names from crews such as Swamp81 or School Records and release-wise he's got a number of upcoming surprises, among them his first EP with Origami Sound.
