RA.288 Consequence

Advanced drum and bass from an Autonomic stalwart: If you were to take his two album projects this year in isolation, it could reasonably be concluded that Cam McLaren had only a peripheral involvement with the drum & bass scene. As one half of They Live alongside Joe Seven, McLaren released Cancel Standard in March this year, a record RA's Andrew Ryce described at the time as "basically an electro album." His forthcoming full-length as Consequence, meanwhile, has far more in common with Aphex Twin than Andy C. So what are his drum & bass credentials? Well, dBridge signed McLaren while on tour in New Zealand back in 2009, figuring that his melodically rich and experimental take on the genre would work perfectly as an album for his label, Exit Records. And he was right. Live For Never stands as one of the finest examples in its class, coinciding perfectly with—and helping to define—the sound that would later be coined as "Autonomic" thanks to dBridge and Instra:mental's ground-breaking podcast series of the same name. They Live - Cancel Standard [EXITLP007] Exit Records

They Live - Cancel Standard [EXITLP007] Exit Records *LP Preview* by stholdings

Released on 12" Vinyl / CD on 28th March 2011.

Exit Records bring a new project to the table with a collaboration between Consequence and Joe Seven. Consequence made his debut on Exit in 2009 with his highly acclaimed album ‘Live For Never’ capturing the attention of electronica fans world-wide with his organic and unique take on Drum n Bass. Also having been a staple part of the Autonomic camp since day one, he’s slowly but surely developing his sound and delving deeper into the unknown. This time he teams up with another new Exit artist Joe Seven (who has an imminent solo single) and together they have created the They Live alias to showcase what happens when these two minds meet in the studio.
The album is very much intended to be listened to in the order it has been presented, as a whole body of music meant to capture your senses and lead you across a soundscape of atmospheres, textures, differing tempos and a variety of percussion elements.
In the same way as a silent movie can stimulate your sense of hearing, Cancel Standard does the opposite like an imageless movie, giving you the soundtrack and letting you imagine your own visual elements. Each track sets its own scene that is part of the bigger picture, creating a body of music that can offer the listener detachment from their immediate surroundings and escapism into an alternate reality.

They Live single next on Autonomic

Via ESP Agency: The first release for Consequence and Joe Seven's new alias They Live is coming soon on dBridge & Instra:mental's Autonomic label. Creeping in with a slightly haunting melody and sparse drums, ‘Pure Palms’ starts off with little indication of where the track might lead; it feels as though it could go in any direction. As it slowly builds, the warmth and weight - and deep-set rhythms - that Consequence is known for begin settling, and open up to an evocative, widescreen track of immense beauty. They Live’s musicality comes through strong throughout the detailed turnings of the downtempo masterpiece, with immersive low-end fills and intricate percussion that take all headphones hostage. ‘Don’t Know What To Say’ brings a darker edge, with crackling sound effects and an ominous, spine-chilling bassline that creates intense and intriguing dynamics. As a solemn melody builds, once again They Live bring a cinematic feel to the dense, ever-growing atmosphere. Brooding with textured sounds, skyscraping synths and head-nodding beats, the mesmerizing track shows huge promise of what’s to come from the powerful duo.

Mosaic Volume 1 [Exit]

Mosaic Vol 1 CD by Exit Records UK

With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles.

As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. Well known producers such as Skream, Instra:mental, Scuba and Commix rub shoulders with some inspiring new talents such as Indigo, Synkro, Mode and Code 3. The theme of the album is quality timeless music, whether it be a dance floor killer such as Systems ‘Observation Point’ or Loxy and Resounds ‘Vertigo’ through to the tangerine dreamlike sounds of Croms ‘Invisible Cities’ or Stray’s ‘Pushed’, this album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today.

Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

Consequence - The Soundium:Blog Interview

Originally from Canada, now living in Australia, with a rich history of playing live instruments Cam McLaren aka Consequence is known for his last year debut album “Live for Never” released on the legendary Exit imprint. This kicked the drum and bass scene into an ambient coma and gave a chance the listeners to experience unimaginable depths of cinematic darkness. Afterwards with a guitar on his back and the album of the year in his hands he toured the world intensely. SOUNDIUM:BLOG caught up with him for a quick chat to see what he’s up to after everything has settled again.
