This week’s FACT mix comes from drum’and’bass veteran Randall.
Although Randall has been releasing records since 1994, he’s primarily a DJ rather than a producer. An acid house convert since 1987′s Notting Hill Carnival, he became a regular fixture on pirate station Centreforce and developed close links to Goldie, Andy C and the rest of the drum’n'bass establishment. Mixtapes – such as the Renegade Selector and Jungle Renegades series – became Randall’s calling cards, and he still releases music on his Stepback Sessions and Mac II labels to this day.
The original Jungle Soundclash Champion, DJ Kenny Ken, dropped in on the Fizzy massive down at Brixton Jamm to play his first ever liquid set on the 12th of April 2014. Even though there were a couple of problems with the monitors cutting out, Kenny showed consummate professionalism and wicked set. One to download.
In 2013 Frederic Robinson released his stunningly unique Mixed Signals album to universal praise from audience and industry alike. At the same time, Frederic was also building up his equally unique live performance. The results of that live performance, captured in this new release available HERE, eschews the usual 2-CDJs-and-a-mixer routine for something completely mesmerising.
Here, he creates a completely new live experience using a bizarre array of instruments spanning the antique, the modern and the homemade. Rather than relying on vast amounts of playback, Frederic builds the tracks from scratch during each performance introducing large elements of improvisation and risk to the music and offering his audience a unique show each and every time. Using a mixture of drumming, modified Wii controllers, wired-up kalimbas, his trusty violin and his own voice, Frederic takes the listener on a journey though adaptations of tracks from Mixed Signals, some new material exclusive to his live work and reinterpretations of some of his remix projects.
As part of dBridge's boundary-pushing Exit Records, London-based Stray has quickly become one-to-watch. In recent years, Stray has risen through the ranks of the d’n'b scene to become a fan favourite among those enjoying the more varied experiments coming out of the stable’s preferred tempo range. He’s also been notable for delving more into half-time hip hop productions. Read the rest of the Fact feature HERE.

Alongside Ed Rush, Matt Quinn (who you’ll undoubtedly know better under his DJ name, Optical) has helped sculpt the drum & bass scene’s multifarious experimentations for nearly two decades now. As producers they pioneered the techstep sound, making crisp and explosive d&b sing on the defining Wormhole album, but as bosses of Virus Recordings they’ve managed to continually stay propulsive releasing music from people like Audio, Optiv & BTK, The Upbeats, Noisia and many many more. A mainstay here, the duo’s forceful and dominating sets are always surefire highlights which is why Fabric London asked Optical to put together an hour long mix which demonstrates a) why the scene hold them in such high regard and b) why Optical’s still one of the most quietly inventive production forces in modern drum & bass.
Machine Code (aka Current Value & Dean Rodell) is a project formed out of true respect and passion for dance music with its origins deep-rooted in Techno. Neither artist needs introduction to any of the scenes they have been busy infiltrating, as these two heavy-weights of underground electronica have been continually releasing tight cuts and forward thinking music for over 20 years between them to date.
Following the release Machine Code's first, forward thinking LP - 'Environments'; which comprised a slab of heavy and experimental and cross-over takes on DnB, Techno and Dubstep - they are once again fresh from working the machines at their own Subdivision Studio in Berlin. A fresh munitions stockpile is ready to be broadcast to and inflicted upon audiences worldwide. Machine Code live's ideal is to bring it back to that original and fresh sound with a true manipulated modular synthesis approach.
They are ready to crush sound systems in their path with relentlessly rushing and hypnotic DnB, lung collapsing Dubstep and dark clanging Techno derived from the darkest depths of their abused machinery.
The Daddy Randall, the DJ’s DJ, the inspiration and role model for nearly all other drum and bass DJs such as Andy C and Friction. He’s been DJing since the mid 80’s, and ripping up drum and bass raves since they began, so it’s fair to say he knows a thing or two about this game!
SUNANDBASS Podcast #23 comes from none other than DJ Randall, and we’re super chuffed to have him join us for the series. Almost 90 minutes of live, fresh, real beats, this one’s chock full of dubs of course, so make sure you lock in and listen carefully for another top drawer lesson!

Zul (Subvert HQ, Singapore) has been DJing and promoting parties in the Lion City since the 1990s, performing along side the likes of dBridge, DJ Friction, Joe Syntax, Stamina MC, John B, A-Sides, Pendulum, Cyantific, Sonic, London Elektricity as well as Logistics and Hospital Records' Chris Goss. Gigs-wise, its gone from Hong Kong (he spent time with the White Label crew in 2001), Jakarta to London (playing at the legendary Hospitality parties in Shoreditch, UK) with bits of radio (MediaCorp Radio's Lush 99.5FM Clubscape sessions, to be exact) and a release on Take Off Records squeezed in between.
When not busy with his day job as a journalist in Singapore, Zul also keeps it cutting edge away from the dance floor with the Subvert Sessions Podcast (download via subverthq.blogspot.sg), blending together leftfield and idiosyncratic beats of the 170bpm variety.
