The scene's godfather looks to the future of grime on this week's RA podcast. Of all the hardcore continuum's many tributaries, grime has kept the lowest profile outside of the UK—although one of the scene's original innovators has been triumphantly addressing that fact this year. Terror Danjah was initially associated with the pioneering Nasty Crew out of East London and latterly the Aftershock crew. He's produced seminal genre workouts like " Love Is Here to Stay," "Cock Back" and "Creepy Crawler," many of which were collected on last year's Gremlinz compilation through Planet Mu. Danjah continued to work with Mike Paradinas' trailblazing imprint this year, putting out the excellent Power Grid EP in July, while his fresh instrumental explorations were further expanded upon via November's Undeniable LP through Hyperdub. The sound of his artist album proper is nicely indicative of his 60-minute mix for us: garage, dubstep, house, rave and classic grime combine alchemically to produce something that very often feels not of any genre. Read the rest of the interview HERE.

Two mixes from the legend that is Doc Scott. The spotter in me laments the lack of a track IDs but quality fresh tunes are included so it is well worth the trip. Enjoy.
Everyone likes dubstep now, and Horsepower basically invented it.
Well, at least they’re credited by most as doing so. Their first two albums, To The Rescue and In Fine Style took the swing of UK garage and the rough reverberations of reggae, dub and jungle, added Wu Tang’s penchant for vaguely narrative film sample use, and inspired a generation – amongst them, modern day figureheads like Skream – to make the sort of music that’s currently taking on the world.
Re-discovered this classic in my collection the other day... check out this favourite from 1999, definitely one of the best tunes from the Pagan vaults. The cut is from All Systems Gone, go seek if you can.

Absolutely one of the best mixes I've heard in awhile. Unreleased goodies abound on this assured encapsulation of the Autonomic sound. Divide by two. It seems so simple in retrospect. But what the producers centered around the "Autonomic" sound— Instra:mental, dBridge and ASC chief among them — devoted themselves to a few years ago has caused an enormous stir in the drum & bass community. It has also reenergized the aforementioned artists, resulting in some of the most indelible work of their (already) lengthy careers spent at 170 BPM. None more so than ASC (AKA James Clements), whose recent album Nothing Is Certain was termed "mature club music of the highest caliber" by RA's Max Bacharach. A distinct break from his more traditional drum & bass of the early '00s, Clements' recent work has shown him embracing a whole new world of possibility. With his RA podcast, he showcases a peek into the future of the Autonomic sound.

The Baron of Techno guides us through his lengthy career, touching on both the personal and the political.
No history of UK electronic music would be complete without a mention of Dave Clarke. Dubbed The Baron of Techno by famed BBC DJ John Peel, Clarke's CV includes a UK #1 dance album, one of the best mix CDs of the past decade and beloved remixes of Felix Da Housecat and Depeche Mode (among many others). Add to this a quick-hitting style behind the decks and a reputation for speaking his mind no matter the consequences, and you have yourself a living legend.

This FACT mix comes from one of dubstep’s first titans, and one of the UK’s most consistant producers, D1. Known as Dwayne Marsh to his parents, one of whom, Antony Marsh was a jungle producer himself, D1 cemented his place in dubstep’s history books with a series of releases in the genre’s DMZ and Tempa dominated half-step days, amongst them the incredible ‘Crack Bong’, a track whose brittle drums, time-stretched samples and main pulse, warped to disorientating proportions, made it perhaps the scariest thing dubstep had produced at that point in its history.

From breaksblog.biz: "I have been digging the vinyl and digital crates for that vintage, warm albeit rough vibe that alot of modern drum and bass just seems to lack. Deep selection from in:Vision, who favours a technical style of mixing utilising up to four decks when playing live. Fast paced sets, top tunes included. Stay tuned.
Highly anticipated doesn't even begin to describe Break's upcoming second long player Resistance out end of this month. I could waffle on forever about how exciting the new batch of tunes are, but instead of feeding you tiresome adjectives listen on and judge for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Matt O’Brien follows in a long and proud tradition of British techno eccentrics. A punk band member before he was bitten by the techno bug, Matt brings a rawness to his dance floor productions on the sporadic but always consistent Off-Key Industries label. Matt’s imprint has put out just five releases in as many years, but it has also spawned the Limited sub-label. To read the interview, go HERE.
FACT’s mix series is 200 sessions old. To honour the occasion, we’ve got a mix from one of our favourite groups of recent times, Darkstar.
The group started as the duo of James Young and Aiden Whalley, with a series of singles on their own 2010 label, as well as MG77 and Clandestine Cultivations. Within a year, they’d become a key part of Kode9’s Hyperdub roster, debuting for the label with the minor classic ‘Need You’/’Squeeze my Lime’. Last month, they released their debut album, North, which has already been hailed as a future classic.
This mix features the original version of North highlight ‘Gold’, as well as cuts from Games, Radiohead, Moodymann, New Order, Shed and more. In the words of the group’s James Young, "it’s a mixed selection, and I’ve tried to keep it in an arrangement that I myself would listen in personally. It’s typical of tunes I’d skip between before I record, and what we were listening to recording the album."
Someone dropped me a message via Facebook to say Zinc didn't drop off the drum & bass radar, he "opted out" instead. But whatever the case, it goes without saying that DJ Zinc is one of the scene's undisputed heavyweights. Recently, he appeared via Twitter to give away two of his best known remixes for free. Everybody is familiar with his remix of ‘Ready or Not’ by The Fugees – an essential and absolutely devastating party smasher.
Mixtape 007 is bought to us by breakthrough producer and DJ, Blawan. A hefty 50 minute mix of House, Techno, Dubstep and everything in between that is a real treat for the ears. Read more HERE.

This edition of the FACT mix – the 199th episode in the series – is a marathon session from one of the most rewarding artists to emerge from the UK this year, Mosca.
Picked as one of our producers to watch back in January, Mosca opened 2010 with the first release on Night Slugs (‘Square One’, backed with the epic ‘Nike’), and one of the highlights of Fabric’s Elevator Music compilation in ‘Gold Bricks, I See You’. A propulsive remix of Four Tet followed, along with hip-hop tempo neck-snapper ‘Tilt Shift’ (forthcoming on Fat City), and listeners to his or Jackmaster’s recent sets will have already heard ‘Got Me Wrong’, a Niche-indebted rush that’s so larger-than-life it reloads itself. Seriously.
The best thing about Mosca’s discography so far is that none of these tunes sound particularly alike; whereas many producers are happy to make their name with a distinctive sound and then milk it for all its worth, Mosca’s already proved hard to pin down after a year on the radar. This week sees the release of one of his most satisfying productions to date, his remix of T. Williams and Terri Walker’s ‘Heartbeat’, which combines lounge house flavours with broken beat, a cut-up vocal climax and an outrageously fat bassline.
To celebrate, he’s worked overtime on this FACT mix, a dizzying 56-tracks-in-100-minutes affair which spans juke, jungle, hip-hop, dancehall, grime, techno and bassline, with new tracks from Pearson Sound, Jay Weed, Spooky and Girl Unit as well as himself. Zul (Subvert HQ, Singapore) has been DJing and promoting parties in the Lion City since the 1990s, performing along side the likes of dBridge, DJ Friction, Joe Syntax, Stamina MC, John B, A-Sides, Pendulum, Cyantific, Sonic, London Elektricity as well as Logistics and Hospital Records' Chris Goss. Gigs-wise, its gone from Hong Kong (he spent time with the White Label crew in 2001), Jakarta to London (playing at the legendary Hospitality parties in Shoreditch, UK) with bits of radio (MediaCorp Radio's Lush 99.5FM Clubscape sessions, to be exact) and a release on Take Off Records squeezed in between.
When not busy with his day job as a journalist in Singapore, Zul also keeps it cutting edge away from the dance floor with the Subvert Sessions Podcast (download via subverthq.blogspot.sg), blending together leftfield and idiosyncratic beats of the 170bpm variety.
