Knowledge | Label of The Month: Digital Soundboy

Shy FX was in his mid-teens when he made tracks that helped define the early jungle scene. Since 2005, he's run Digital Soundboy with one purpose: to release music he likes, whatever the style or tempo.

The drum & bass scene has changed a lot since the mid-90s, when Shy FX was releasing genre-defining tracks such as Original Nuttah. But Shy's enthusiasm for music has stayed constant. He started Digital Soundboy in 2005 to be a close-knit team of artists with a passion for UK dance music in its many forms.

"The whole point of Digital Soundboy is it's good music, whether it's drum & bass, dubstep, broken beat, hip hop, whatever," says Shy. "We want to put out the best music we can, and not think about tempos."

FACT mix 158: Instra:Mental

DOWNLOAD HERE.

A duo comprising Alex Green and Damon Kirkham, Instra:mental have been releasing music under that guise since 2000. Over the past decade they’ve become known principally for a kind of dubstep-influenced drum ‘n bass minimalism, but that’s really just one facet of their sound – electro-flavoured vocal tracks like ‘Leave It All Behind’ and the masterful ‘Watching You’ owe as much to Drexciya and Kraftwerk as anything from the UK soundsystem tradition, while ‘Tramma’ and ‘Forbidden’ are among the best techno-not-techno tracks of the 21st century.

The duo’s FACT mix is centered around their own productions and music from other Nonplus and related artists. Look out particularly for ‘Forbidden’, the aforementioned track from their Apple Pips 12″ of 2009, and for ‘Rift Zone’ and ‘Doink!’, both forthcoming on Loefah’s Swamp81 imprint. Skream’s hugely underrated ‘Minimalistix’ is another stand-out; he also contributes the as-yet-unreleased ‘Rollin’ Kicks’. Addison Groove, LOL, Photocell (remixed by Dexter), Kito and Riya all weigh in with heavy productions. Essential.

Track list:

L.O.L – White noise – Nonplus
Instra:mental – Forbidden – Applepips
Skream – Minimalistix – Nonplus
Unknown – Tired Light – Darkestral
Instra:mental – Doink! – Swamp81
Instra:mental – Vicodin – Naked Lunch
Instra:mental – Tramma – Nonplus
Skream – Rollin’kicks – Dub
Addison Groove – Untitled – Swamp 81
Photocell – Silver Clouds (Dexter remix)
Instra:mental – Voyuer – Disfigured Dubs
Skream – Exothermic Reaction – Nonplus
Addison Groove – Footcrab – Swamp 81
Instra:mental – Rift Zone – Swamp 81
Riya ft/ Skream – Siminimal – Autonomic
Kito – This City – Dub
L.O.L – Dare – Nonplus

Benga - Baltimore Clap + FREE TRACK

Benga's Phaze: One EP is out now on Tempa and the A-side track, Baltimore Clap, now has an official animated video. Kristofer Ström from Blinkink made it and he says it "follows a hapless little chap on a terrifying journey through a cavernous clap factory".

Of course Benga is also part of Magnetic Man alongside Skream & Artwork and they've spent the past few months holed up in a studio in Cornwall working on their heavily anticipated debut album. Skream has just 'leaked' a free taster from the album called MAD (download it below).

KODE 9 // FACT MIX #156 [June 2010]

This month, 9 will release the latest in K7’s DJ-Kicks series of mix CDs, a journey from elasticated house and dancehall, through soul, funk and hip-hop, to overbearing dubstep and grime. Kode is one of the world’s best DJs – his extended sets at Plastic People last year are spoken of with pure reverence, and this year he’s let out specialist mixes in 2step and “sino-grime”. Here he contributes a mix of “mostly ’94-’96 jungle”, bound by an icy, misty quality. Lemon D, DJ SS, Undercover Agent and more feature.

Knowledge | Interview: Netsky

One of my favourite new producers Netsky chats with Knowledge, read the interview HERE.

The figure stood in front of this charged up crowd, behind a mountain of monitors, laptops and decks, giving out the nods, is more than happy with what's going on. His set has sucked in everyone; the "I'm gonna chill at the side" crowd, the girls slurping on their VK's by the bar, even the army of smokers have opted to put down their baccy to come in and have a listen.

And so they should, because not only is it the official album launch of Hospital Records' newest signing, but it's also the sound of an artist who has risen through the ranks in blink-and-you'll-miss-it fashion, and is setting himself to take the world of DnB by storm. Netsky has finally landed.

Welcome again in Deep East EP project. This time we would like to present next part of music from our friends. The second EP opens up with “Blind Desire” by KaLGaN from Moscow – a track that sounds like 100% classic atmospheric d’n’b, thus reminding of something familiar, yet remains truly fresh and original. The view on beautiful, tranquil and warm soundscapes continue with the works of St. Petersburg’s Parhelia – the author of the melodious, upbeat and slightly fable-like “Endless falling into the darkness at the inner ocean” and Moscow’s Tony Leparty and his deep, melancholic “White Winter” remixed by Urban Trip. At the end Ultracode & Nuage with “1234567” and their russian phone call. “Deep East” is a crisp breeze from the East, carrying loads of zest and positive energy in the shape of musical works by the generation of talented producers who will make you want keep an eye on them in the future. All of this, free delivered to you by Absys Records.

FACT mix 153: Peter Van Hoesen

Arguably the most exciting thing to come out of Brussels since JCVD, Peter Van Hoesen debuted in 2006 with the Increments EP on Berlin’s Lan Muzic label, but over the past four years has moved away from the minimal sound associated with that label and instead cultivated his own deep but reliably bolshy techno style. This applies to his DJing as well: much to FACT’s delight, he’s a selector unafraid to explore higher BPMs and revel in the intensification of funk that they bring. At the risk of sounding like a middle-aged man in an Underground Resistance hoodie, this is proper techno we’re dealing with.

RBMA Radio - Synkro vs Indigo [On The Floor! - Live at Deadly Rhythm, Plan B, London]

RBMA Radio - Synkro vs Indigo (Z Audio, Manchester) - On The Floor! - Live at Deadly Rhythm, Plan B, London

Synkro and Indigo have both independently (and sometimes together) been climbing up the ladder of credibility and recognition in the dubstep and two step scenes. Synkro is a long hailed tech producer in the current Manchester scene and the deep beats and haunting vocals spilling out of his studio like the 'You Don't Mind' EP are mesmerizing folks everywhere. Indigo has also been collecting supporters of his dubtech fusions of late, Modeselektor and Mary-Anne Hobbs included and he too has been accused of kick-starting the new wave of dub-driven productions coming out of Manchester. Here you can catch both of them back to back in full effect at Deadly Rhythm at London's Plan B.

Synkro – Back Then – Dub

DOGS ON ACID AND ZARDONIC PRESENT RETALIATION

This is one of the more extreme drum & bass mixes I've come across of late, courtesy of Venezuela's Zardonic. Death metal and heavy tech step (deathstep??) in the mix and it is surprisingly good.

In his recent Dogs On Acid interview (read it here) he says: "In all honesty I'm curious to see what people would think. Something tells me a lot of people are going to love it, but there's another lot that's going to feel absolutely pissed off, especially because I'm playing a lot of hard techno and gabber on it, and also exposing my favorite track off the recently released Pendulum album Immersion. But I could give two shits about it. It just makes me laugh how people that I've respected during the years and have worked with me even call me sellout for doing that. But I've always had a great respect for Pendulum, especially their newer stuff which I believe is very innovative. So yeah, the set goes from 2 steppers to grindsteppers to hard techno to hardcore to metal, there's just a lot in it. I do hope most people will dig it though as I kinda tried something different on this set, I'm using a lot of personal edits and 'potpourris' (mash-ups) blending many tunes together in the sequencer with some of my own edits, a la The Panacea. A couple classics, a couple dubplates, and obviously fresh new stuff."

DOC SCOTT : FUTURE BEATS VOL.1 by docscott31

FACT mix 149: The Sight Below

Not a common sight this but worth a listen, especially for late 80s/90s shoegaze fans. This year, The Sight Below returned with a new album, It All Falls Apart, which saw him delve further into beatless, drone-led material, and work with one of his biggest influences in Simon Scott of early ‘90s shoegaze heroes Slowdive, as well as Sub Pop vocalist Tiny Vipers. Slowdive open his FACT mix, which is an expert journey through various strains of shoegaze and post-punk, starring Spacemen 3, Cocteau Twins and more.

In TSB’s words, “everything here is from vinyl, some tracks sound shittier than others, ‘specially if they were on a 7”. There’s some creation, 4AD and Factory Records in the mix, but also a few other “mainstream” things, so it is not all obscure.”

XLR8R Podcast: IKONIKA

As the sounds emanating from London continue to morph faster than people like us can slap a proper genre name on them, and the number of producers and DJs involved in this funky/garage/bass music movement continues to grow, it seems like there are very few constants in the UK's electronic music scene. So when Ikonika (a.k.a. Sara Abdel-Hamid) dropped Contact, Love, Want, Have, her debut album and one of only a handful of full-length efforts on Hyperdub (the others belonging to Burial and label head Kode9), it qualified as a genuine big deal. She's put together this exclusive XLR8R podcast that was mixed live and includes all kinds of dubplates and unreleased goodies.

FACT mix 144: The Black Dog [April 2010]

Another one to log under "influences": The Black Dog were among the first acts to grab me into the world of electronic music. Their abstract techno ditties were challenging back then but now an absolute joy.

Out soon is Music for Real Airports, a brand new album from The Black Dog positioned as a contemporary response to Brian Eno’s seminal but rarely interrogated 1978 ambient work Music For Airports. Going up against Eno in his pomp might seem like a foolhardy pursuit, but Music For Real Airports is a strikingly well-realised and satisfying work, and an ambitious start to the new decade from a group which seems set to innovate and inquire long into the future.

In the meantime, check out The Black Dog’s FACT mix - a set comprised entirely of remixes of, or by, the group. DOWNLOAD HERE.

FACT mix 147: Redlight [May 2010]

As Clipz, he makes wobbly clownstep perfect for the under 18 bassline and amen crowd. But now Hugh Pescod has reinvented himself as Redlight and is pushing a new sound: an individual vision of bass music where grime, dubstep and squealing electro bleed into a sometimes overwhelmingly vibrant fusion, often soundtracked by ragga and grime vocalists.

It's also - shocker - quite good. DOWNLOAD HERE.
